The Christopherus Second Grade Curriculum and Third Grade Curriculum will be published Summer 2008. Here is a very basic outline of the lesson content:

Second Grade Lessons

As in first grade, we base our weekly schedule on a 4 day week. The weeks add up to a 33 week year – this gives lots of time for holiday preparation, camping trips and other things which could be seen to destroy a too tight schedule.

Main Lessons:

Language Arts

  • Saints and Heroes 4 weeks (already available: see Saints and Heroes)
  • King of Ireland’s Son 3 weeks
  • Animal Legends 4 weeks (already available: see Animal Legends)
  • Trickster Tales 3 weeks

Math

Science

  • Four Nature Stories main lessons of 1, 3 or 4 weeks’ duration

Form Drawing

  • One 2 week block

Other Lessons

There are also specific lessons, instructions and ideas for lessons in

  • Music (recorder and singing)
  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Movement
  • Cooking
  • Handwork and Crafts
  • Games
  • Health and Safety
  • Social Studies
  • Gardening
  • Ongoing form drawing - using our Form Drawing for Beginners book to continue your child’s lessons in form drawing.

Third Grade Overview of Lessons

Our assumption this year, as in past years, is that you still have a 4 day week. This will change next year. We give the following main lessons which add up to a 34 week year – this gives you enough leeway to schedule in an extra week for this or that block; to add in a weeks’ camping trip or similar; and to generally ensure that life breathes and is not too hectic!

This is the rough outline of the year – please note that it is possible that the finished curriculum might be a little different! It is only November when I am writing this and publication is late spring – there might be a few changes between now and then! But we wanted to give people something to look at and consider so here are the main lessons:

Language Arts

  • Old Testament Stories - one 6 week block (already available - see Old Testament Stories)
  • Stories of Wonder - one 3 week block
  • Native Americans - two 4 week blocks

Math

  • one review block
  • one on time and money
  • one on measuring
  • one on consolidation and moving forward

Practical Projects

  • two blocks - one of 3 weeks, the other 4, on gardening, farming and making various indoor and outdoor building projects

Science

  • Three 1 week blocks on weather

Please bear in mind that it is very difficult to set out the Third Grade schedule because there is a lot of overlap between the different main lessons. Math, for instance, also features in the Practical Projects block and Weather blocks (mainly measuring). And Building as a third grade subject comes during the Practical Projects blocks as well as during the study of Native Americans.
