Although Kovacs retells many of the same myths and stories that the D’Aulaires present in their book, his stories are a bit thin and many of the key stories are missing. Thus in our 5th grade curriculum we require the D’Aulaire book for the mythology half of our 6 week main lesson.

This book, however, is indispensable for the second half of the main lesson, when we turn from mythology to history. In the lively narrative style favored by Waldorf teachers, Kovacs, himself a master Waldorf teacher, spins wonderful descriptions and stories of life in Sparta and Athens all the way to the life of Alexander the Great.

These books complement one another and together are an essential part of our 5^th grade curriculum.
