5th Grade Mathematics - a Guide

Christopherus Fifth Grade Curriculum

Fifth Grade Mathematics - a Guide

by Donna Simmons

A guide to creating the arithmetic component of the 5th grade curriculum.

27 pages + 8 tear-out worksheets, 8½"x11", spiral bound - $15

Important Note: This is not a stand-alone curriculum. It requires a selection of Key To workbooks. See below to purchase the workbooks.

Please note: this guide cannot stand alone without a selection of the Key To workbooks. The material in the workbooks comprises the bulk of your child's 5th grade mathematics lessons. See below for details about the different workbooks.

Fifth Grade Mathematics - a Guide contains the following:

  • goals and overview of 5th grade math
  • topics such as making a schedule; using manipulatives; making a Math Notebook; using a calculator; looking toward 6th grade
  • teaching advice
  • suggestions for further resources
  • ideas for hands-on and active math
  • discussion of this year's work with the 4 processes, measurement, fractions, decimals, number journeys and word problems
  • guides to the use of the various Key To workbooks
  • several reproducible blackline masters, timed drill sheets and pages of practice problems.

Which workbooks to choose?

This depends on what your child covered last year and how much review she or he needs. You must also choose between the Metric and "American" options.

Note: the metric system will be introduced to American children in our 6th grade mathematics curriculum.

Your child will be doing work in measurement, fractions (common fractions) and decimals (decimal fractions) this year so you need at least some of the Key To books from each category. Americans do not need metric measurement and non-Americans need not concern themselves with our measurement system!

If you used our Fourth Grade Mathematics, you need:

Key to Measurement, Book 4 (either metric or American)

Key to Fractions, Books 3 and 4

Key to Decimals, Books 1,2 and 3

Those of you who did not use our materials last year need to determine whether you need Measurement, Books 1 and 2 and Fractions, Books 1 and 2.

This year we also sell Answer Keys. Some of you might be a bit rusty or need a quick way to correct your child's work. The Answer Keys overlap and some cover books we do not use this year. This is unfortunate but is how Key To  designed them.

For how this 5th grade math book fits into the progress of math in the Christopherus Curriculum, see: The Christopherus Curriculum - Mathematics

Key To Measurement

American Units

Key To Measurement Book 1

Key To Measurement, Book 1: $4

If you used our 4th Grade Mathematics last year, you should already own and have worked with this book.

For all others: If your child has done very little measurement work, especially hands-on work, you need this book.

Metric Units

Key To Metric Measurement Book 1

Key To Metric Measurement, Book 1: $4

Key To Measurement Book 2

Key To Measurement, Book 2: $4

If you used our 4th Grade Mathematics last year, you should already own and have worked with this book.

For all others: The book begins with a brief review of measurement concepts, then focuses on changing from one unit to another - e.g. feet to yards in the American book and meters to centimeters in the metric book. Area and perimeter are covered in both.

Key To Metric Measurement Book 2

Key To Metric Measurement, Book 2: $4

Key To Measurement Book 4

Key To Measurement, Book 4: $4

All 5th graders need Book 4.

This book focuses mainly on weight, capacity,  temperature and time.

Book 3 does not form part of our curriculum for 5th grade. It deals with topics that are covered later in the Christopherus/Waldorf curriculum.

Key To Fractions, Book 1: $4

Again, which books you choose depends on what you and your child did last year:

If you used our Fourth Grade Mathematics, then you already have Books 1 and 2. You then need to purchase only Books 3 and 4.

Key To Fractions, Book 1 is a very basic workbook suitable for children who have done no work at all with fractions or who need more review than Book 2 provides.

Key To Fractions Book 2

Key To Fractions, Book 2: $4

Key To Fractions, Book 2 begins with a short review of basic concepts and then moves on to multiplying and dividing fractions. There is also a section on factors.

Key To Fractions Book 3

Key To Fractions, Book 3: $4

Key To Fractions, Book 3 starts with a review of material from Book 2, then moves on to adding and subtracting fractions.

Key To Fractions Book 4

Key To Fractions, Book 4: $4

Key To Fractions, Book 4:  This workbook focuses on mixed numbers. This will be challenging for some children but all 5th graders should at least be exposed to this material.

Key To Decimals

Key To Decimals Book 1

Key To Decimals, Book 1: $4

All 3 of these decimals books are required for the Christopherus 5th grade curriculum.
(Book 4  forms part of the 6th grade curriculum.)

Key To Decimals, Book 1 is a very basic workbook dealing exhaustively with place value; the use of zeros in decimals; the relationship between common fractions and decimals; money; and expanded notation.

Key To Decimals Book 2

Key To Decimals, Book 2: $4

Key To Decimals, Book 2: Review - then adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals.

Key To Decimals Book 3
