A thoughtful and loving book to help us on
our journey as parents. |
Warmth-filled, loving, compassionate and thoughtful, Katrina Kenison helps us reconnect to our desire to be gentle but firm parents. Her words are encouraging but never patronizing; helpful but never disempowering; clear but never clinical. This is not just a 'been-there-done-that' kind of parenting book but rather a precious glimpse at the thoughtful musings of a mother in the throes of parenting 2 young boys.
Kenison writes as a Waldorf parent (though it is not clear for how long her sons were at a Waldorf school). Schooling is not really the focus of the book and there few references to Waldorf education, aside from the (misspelt!) indebtedness which she expresses to Rudolf Steiner. This is not a book about applying Waldorf principles to parenting: it is the record of a mother's journey as she embraces an authentic, holistic, centered and, above all, peaceful way to parent.
Mitten Strings for God is a book to help one get really clear about one's priorities as a parent. It is about the small things which make life precious, the moments of shared giggles and of peaceful joy. It is also a very practical book, packed with how-to suggestions on issues such as "Achieving Balance"; "Living a Spiritual Life"; "Cooking with Children"; "The Simple Pleasures of Shared Meal Times"; "How to Live with No TV"; and much, much more. A couple of excerpts:
It is Sunday afternoon. Jack is curled up in the crook of my arm, having decided to finger-knit a whole ball of yarn while I crochet mitten strings for all our surviving pairs. We have been quiet, absorbed in our work, for quite some time when he asks, "This is peace, isn't it?" I agree that it is indeed. "I love this peace," he says.
So often we bemoan our children's hyperactivity and short fuses. But what kind of example do we set for them as we race from here to there ourselves, trying to accomplish more, have more, experience more, in the course of a day? My rambunctious five year-old actually craves stillness, embraces it gratefully, whenever I stop long enough to create it with him.

A few nights ago, at an informal gathering at our church, a father asked our minister how he should take care of his son's spiritual life. The reverend's answer was simple: "Just take care of your own". Our children learn by imitation. And just as we try, through our own actions, to model for them the art of living, we can also model a way of spiritual seeking - of openness, of prayer, of faith and devotion. When we live in a way that is consistent with our own beliefs and ideals, we give our children a gift. We bring spirituality into the here and now. We teach them that deeds and words are expressions of the spirit, that our gestures speak for our souls.
